Here is the difference on the exterior body trim X-code options for the 69 Camaro.

X-11 - includes the chrome drip rail molding, rear quarter moldings, black body sill, and the wheel well opening moldings. This was the trim option for the SS-350, RS, the Base Camaro, including the Yenko.
X-44 - base camaro exterior trim group, including the COPO 9560 ZL1. No exterior body trim what so ever.
X-66 - was for the big blocks only, SS396 and the Yenko. The tail pan was painted black, including rear quarter moldings and black body sill (depending on the color of the car).
X-22 - Same as the X-66, but it included the chrome drip rail moldings and wheel well opening moldings.
X-55 - This was an exterior trim option for the SS-350, including only the black body sill and the rear quarter moldings.
X-33 - only for the Z28, included the Z28 stripes, wheel well openings, chrome drip rail molding, rear quarter moldings, black body sill ( again, depending on the color
of car)
X-77 - again only for the Z28, just the Z28 stripes for this exterior trim group.
*There were also the Z10 and Z11 codes, for the hardtop and conv pace cars.

Lastly, the Z21 X-code exterior trim option - this included the bright vertical bars in the taillamps, chrome driprail molding, black body sill, wheel well opening molding, wheel opening paint stripes, rear quarter moldings, and bright headlamp bezel face moldings. Most RS optioned Camaros were put into the Z21 X-code option, with the exception of the hideaway headlights and special RS taillamps.

I hope this helps Ed....

Is there a good book to take with you when looking for Chevys that explains all the codes, options, VIN's, etc?

I am planning to attend an auction and want to know how to verify the options before purchase.

A bit of clarification is in order.

All X11 indicates is style trim group. Has nothing to do with engine. Few COPOs are X11.

All X44 indicates is no exterior trim. Has nothing to do with engine. Many COPOs are X44.

X66 is SS396 w/o style trim group. Only the first batch of Yenkos were X66.

FYI . . .

Z10 option was NOT a Pace Car Hardtop. On the window sticker of one, it says "Special Accent Striping" on a Z11 which is a Pace Car Conv. those window stickers say, "Indy Pace Car Accent Striping". The orange stripes on a Z10 do not make it a Pace Car. Also, the Z10 were available with any interior option Except the orange houndstooth interior that the Z11 pace cars came with. A lot of mystery on the Z10 cars, but they are not pace cars.

Well Matt, If you are getting "technical" there was only one "Pace Car" (two if you count the back-up) The rest were Z11 Pace Car Replicas.

An interesting fact is that the houndstooth interior was not available (probably due to durability issues) as an option on convertibles. Orange houndstooth was mandatory with 69 pace cars.

I believe in '69 there were actually 3 cars prep'd as official pace cars.

Can you get pic's of the window stickers? It would sure help cool the coals when this topic flairs up.
