Default Chevy Hemi

Thanks to all on the replies to my questions about those rare camaros.I didnt have a chance to reply in time,so I will leave the post down in no mans land where it sits.

I recently stumbled across a rare piece.I have a 1966 casting chevy 327 shortblock that is the one off chevy Hemi.It has the bore and stroke of a regular 327,but the pistons sit down in the barrel and have the valve reliefs located on the sides of the pistons. It has a big block timing cover and crank snout, and the lifter valley of the block is completly different then a regualr smallblock. The lifter valley was cast with deep reliefs in it to clear the pushrods, and is not shaped at all like standard smallblock valley{the difference is cast, not machined}.I had the numbers written down, but lost the sheet,I will have to get them again when I go to the shop tommorrow. The engine was aquired in the estate sale of a New Jersey street rod collector who recently passed away. The heads were supposedly sent out to the machine shop and never returned. The owner supposedly never had an intake manifold, but did have a complete Z11 427 that he was supposed to trade to Yunick for the intake manifold, but the deal fell though. As it stands right now,we have the block, crank, rods and pistons to this peice, and want to get the rest of it together,or get our stuff into the right hands.I will post again tommorrow with the casting numbers, and maybe somebody will be able to help me out. Thanks again.

Rich, I think I know someone that has a pair of the hemi heads. I don't know if he would sell them or not, but he's in the NJ/PA area so you could probably check them out in person if he still has them and is thinking about selling them.

Mowtown,You are Da man!I passed the info onto my friend who is handling the estate. It turns out he already had the neame, just not a contact number. As for the heads,we would like to contact whoever has the heads, maybe this thing can be reunited once again. doubt many of these things exist,so if these eads are in Jersey,I bet they are the ones that were on this engine. If anybidy has info,I will definatly follow up on it.It is amazing how small the internet has made the world.

Not to be picky or anything, but why does everyone call the experimental 302 a "hemi"? Isn't it really a factory experimental/modified smallblock with a staggered valve arrangement like a big block? Shouldn't it be called a "porcupine" 302 engine instead? A true hemi would have the spark plug coming in from the top of the cylinder and the valves arranged on either side of the plug in a half circle domed design, one under the intake port and the other above the exhaust port. Just my 2 cents.
