Default holley 3 barrels...

hey guys!
i've never run a holley 3 barrel before. I now have a stock 4346 on my 69 and was thinking of trying out a 4781 850. i've heard that the big 3 barrels never ran that good but have never tried one myself. i've seen 950's and 1050's
for sale on ebay. do you think one would out perform an 850 due to the size? maybe pete has tried one.
i am putting the motor back in my car after a few mods and have been thinking at nite about this... i need more MPH!!!
let me know what you think.
thanks! steve keech sarasota florida

On the 950,when you get the secondaries to open at the right time and ample fuel gets delivered to prevent a slight bog it pulls like a bear on top end---All these things can be accomplished with a little work----BUT it can be done much easier with 3310 OR 850 DOUBLE pumper---especially having secondary jets to play with.---JoeG

I have taken the 850 off my ZL-1 and put on a worked 850 that flows 996cfm. The car slowed down a little bit. since that test though, I put on a new fuel pump with my stock 850 and picked up 3 mph!!! So now i will have to try the 996 cfmer again. Keep in mind this is with a stock cam and exhaust manifolds. When i bought that carb, it was for my 55 Chev with a 502/headers and it picked up 3 tenths instantly.

COPOPETE,
When you said you replaced the fuel pump--was the pump wearing out or did you step up to a pump with more flow --JoeG

It was a brand new GM pump for an L-72. I put an Holley pump on it. Also I use the 3/8 line to "T" with 5/16 which likely does not help it any! Also found it interesting that going from a 780 vac to 850 DP the car picked up 3 tenths in back to back runs. When they tested Charlies ZL-1 in 69 they were running the 780 vac on it from what I understrand!

Speaking of the fueling of a Daytona carb, does anyone have a source for mechanical secondary squirters? I had a tough time finding them new- although I did.

Yes, Motion used to package it. I scored two NOS ones made by EELCO. I even asked Holley about them but they didn't know much. I beleive several people made them and it appears they are the only band-aid for the jetting issue. I guess another option would be the tunable air bleeds. I'll probably be working on the carb over the summer
