Default Question about 1968 Chevelle L78 (Not COPO)

I know this isn't a COPO, or a Yenko, and im sure it must be pretty insignificant when placed beside some of the beautiful cars on this site, but I figured who better to know the information I seek than the best Chevelle collectors in the world

Well I got my documentation back from GM Canada vintage services. I had my car decoded the car once on Chevelles.com before, but I wanted to be 110% sure what I owned, and I wanted it in writing. I don't have a build sheet so this is the best I could do. I do have my pop-o-plate however. So here is some of my documentation. I like to also add that I am floored becasue I had no idea what car I had.

So I don't know weather to laugh or cry. I have a 1968 L78, one of 19 in Canada - sitting here without the original engine and transmission, and the incorrect rear end from a 68 Beaumont. (but it is a 12 bolt and a .373 with boxed rear end etc) A basket case. Do I leave her alone, or do I owe it to myself to restore this car to a proper engine and tranny (obviously it wont be the original but era correct). I am dumbfounded, and I don't know where to go from here. I don't even know enough of the basics to know what casting numbers I should be looking for on the block, heads etc. I was hoping you guys could help me out. I have no intention of selling this car, becasue it is very sentimental to me, so as long as I can get castings numbers okay - the dates I don't care about, becasue it is to far gone to save anyways. I recently moved the car to a bigger garage so I have more room to work on it - I only live in a small town house.

Well any input comments appriciated, and again that you guys for decoding my numbers a few months back - you guys are a great help.

I was told when I bought it that it was a Malibu (owner knew nothing about it) - I paid almost nothing for it - but the car was solid. I was going to drop in a 502 crate and make a car to use at the local drag strip. Now I don't have the heart to put a torch to it.

Here is a copy of my pop plate. I reversed the image so you can read it better. With this information maybe people will be a bit more helping on my quest for knowledge

Here is a picture of the car as it sits. The picture was taken at the back of the Supreme court of Canada, looking upon the Canadian Parlement buildings in Ottawa. THe building that is all light up is the Library which is under flood lights, and tarp for construction.

Can someone point me in the right direction or something, I don't know where to begin.

Again, thank you guys for your help

Eric,

I guess I missed your post on Team Chevelle, but I'll try to help here. Since you have the POP and documentation from Vintage Vehicle Services of Canada, a build sheet would be little more than window dressing. You certainly have nothing to cry about! You need to decide, first, what is really important to you. If you like your car the way it is, then leave it the way it is. If you want to make changes to the car, do what you want to do. One thing for sure - a documented 375 hp Chevelle, whether it has the original drivetrain or not, will be worth the most money when it is kept as close to original as possible.

One neat thing - Your car was originally delivered on 4/3/68, my dad's 40th birthday

Well Eric, you could sell it to me for a small profit and your worries would be over . Where do you live by the way?

Hey your from the Montreal area - are you familiar with the History of this dealership or do you have any tasty tit-bits of information?

I was joking around, instead of painting back to Matador red, I should paint it blue and white like the "Fleur de Lis".. Just kidding.

Its up to you guys, I don't want to be a bandwith hog - but if you want to see any photos or anything just let me know.
