I just bought a 68 GTO with a 400 auto.I noticed that it was running rough so I check the dwell and it was sitting just below 20 and I know that it suppost to be at 28-32.I ajusted the points to 30 and then I check the timing it was alittle past 12 degrees advanced it suppost to be at 9 degrees so I was ajusting the timimg back to 9 degrees and it wanted to die.So what I ended up doing was puting the timing back were it was and the points back were it was and it runs better but still runs alittle rough.I have'nt replaced points or spark plugs.I appreciate any and all suggestions. Thanks

Try balancing the carb.with a Vacuum gauge & check the underside of your Distributor cap for corrosion.

Basic rules for tuning up points ign. cars.
Always set dwell 1st. 30 deg. for any v8 gm. Always set timing 2nd. Make sure vac advance is unpluged. Adjust carb last. Reason for this: dwell makes a difference in timing, and carb tune up. timing only messes with carb tune up. Adjusting carb will not make any difference in dwell or timing. You use the vac gauge just like you would the tac. look for the best vac reading when adjusting the carb. Do it right and you get..... ![]()

I would put a new set of plugs, a condensor, and a new set of points in it. I would check the cap and wires also. That way I would know for sure all the parts were good.

I would go ahead and do a general tune up,Points, condensor, plugs, cap, wires and then adjust the carb and timing.I just did a 44 mopar and all it that was wrong was a couple plug wires going bad!
