Default Dana Camaro block number question

What sort of casting number should be on an engine block in a '67 Dana 427 Camaro? Any way a 3855961 would have been used? Most sources say this was a '66 396 block but I saw one mention as a possible 427 application.

Thanks,
-Jon

I would think it would be a #351.

From what I remember 961 was a 2 bolt 396 used in just about everything in 65 and 66. 962 same deal but 4 bolt 396 high perf applications used in Z16's, 425hp Corvettes, etc.

The 962 was also used in 66 Chevelle as 4-bolt 375 & 360 HP motors. Hold on to a wall or sit down when you price a 351 block.

I have seen a few 4-bolt #351 blocks recently go for $6000 to $8,500. The corvette guys really drive up the demand for these. I just scored a nice deal on a fresh '67 L-88 with iron '67 dated #392 sq. port heads. The engine was bought over the counter at Berger Chev. in 1967 by the owner. Cool story.

Kim, guess where it's going.

COPO,
Wouldn't the iron sq. port heads be #391?
I'd like to hear more about the over the counter Berger L88.

I also just scored a `67 L88, but with Aluminum #392 heads. The block is a 3904351 4-bolt.
It has a stamped code on the block of "IT". Does the one you found have a code stamped into it?

I have the motor from serial #000004 427 and its a #942, and dated Aug 12 65..That tells me the 942s were cast before the production run of the 66 began, so i cant see GM boring leftover 396 #961s out to 427 cu in ..It does give some ebay sellers a reason to sell a 200.00 block for 5000.00 though.

Tonawanda engine plant assembled 277 of the 427-430 hp "IT" for 1967 (L-88). What info is stamped on the pad and the casting date and casting part number?
