Hi Rick:
I was not aware ls-5 and ls6 used the same code. But now it makes sense why someone cloning a ls-6 wanted my spare ls-5 rearend so bad. I donot sell and kept telling him it would not be the right code. LOL Oh boy. Still learning after all these years.

All the 454 Chevelles in 70 used a special rear end (heavy duty ring and pinion), a unique pinion flange and driveshaft. That is why it is so easy to clone an LS-6 if you had an LS-5 to start with. The engine and tach are really the only thing different between the two.

Stefano,
If I understand you correctly you are stating that sometimes they are different betweent the LS5/LS6? They might be between the 454 and a 396 car but not an LS5/LS6. This was purely a date/plant thing. Mid year production went from a single line 727 pump to a dual line 768 pump regardless if it was an LS5 or LS6. As an example, Annie's 1st week of January LS-5 has the dual line and 768 pump just as an LS-6 would.

You are confusing me, which is not difficult to do. LS5 always dual lines? LS6 Sometimes Dual lines, based on production date/plant? 396 non L78 always Dual lines?

Then we are very much alike.

No, all 454's started out with the single line, 727 pump and mid year changed over to the dual line, 768 pump regardless of horsepower rating. I don't study the 396 cars so I can't comment on them. Someone correct me if I am wrong however as I don't profess to know everything about these cars and could be mistaken.

Interestingly enough, I also have a 2nd week of Jan. Leeds sheet that shows a single line 727 pump so they seems to be bouncing back and forth.

Sorry guys, going on memory again and stuck my foot in my mouth. LS-5s used the dual lines and early LS-6's used the single, late used the dual. Sorry for the confusion. I need to keep my stuff handy instead of going on memory and learn to keep my mouth shut. Thanks Stefano for the ass kicking.
