Preserving Codes During Block Cleaning

I have a '70 LS5 Chevelle block that really needs to be cleaned as it has light surface rust all over it. I believe most shops will shot-blast (or steel-abraid, whatever) the block and I am concerned that the original deck stamp will get wiped away from the cleaning process. Anyone have personal experience with this?

The media blaster I use has a special tape that protects parts you do not want blasted. May work for steel shot also. You could also just wire wheel it or use the safest rust remover that njsteve backs.

Yeah, I would get a big plastic garbage can and rig up the same recirculation pump with the www.safestrustremover.com liquid and let it run. No risk to the metal, and it will get cleaner than blasting with no chance of an errant sand grain getting lodged in an oil passage.

Great idea with the rust remover. It will give me a chance to try this stuff out. Will a 5 gallon bucket be enough? Thanks for your help guys.

Five gallons should work. The key is to get a little sump pump that draws from the bottom so it doesnt need a deep supply of the liquid at all times. Then route the spray house to a garden spray head and just let it run for a day or two, moving the spray head in various positions every few hours to cover the whole block. I got all my supplies from home depot for about $70 altogether.

And get a little plastic kiddie pool to put under the engine stand. You could also use an aquarium pump. It takes a bit of time to set it all up, but then just relax while it does the work for you. I've used the stuff a lot already and I couldn't be happier with the results.
