Default Painted steel 14x7 XT wheels body color

In 1969 did Chevrolet always paint the wheels on base model Camaros, Chevelles or Novas the body color of the car? Were there any color combinations that would get black or silver wheels with the dog dish hub caps?

If the car was to get full wheel covers the outer face of the rim was painted black. If it was to get dog dishes, the rims were painted body color on the face.....

At least that's my understanding.

I believe it became common practice to paint wheels body color when equipped with dog dish in all divisions by 1969. In Earlier years, notably 1966 Only Oldsmobile and Buick painted the wheels to match the car. Olds assembly manual verifies the painting procedure. Could also have varied by plant. Chevrolet stayed with black wheels. Passing this along from a Chevy buddy. Cant speak for Pontiac in the mid 60's

I believe poverty (Dog dish) caps got the whole weel painted body color. Otherwise no paint. On the poverty cap cars the spare was also painted body color.

My '66 SS Chevelle 375 ragtop (Baltimore build) absolutely without question came with body color wheels and small caps. Orig NOS spare in trunk and other 4 wheels were in the mag wheel boxes with small caps wrapped in local newspaper dated 8 days after car delivery and they all are body color. I also owned a '67 Malibu untouched original a few years back and wheels were body color.

When I was researching this four years ago (for my '67 Camaro) the consensus here was that if the car came from the factory with the base dog-dish hubcaps it got body-colored wheels. If full wheel covers were installed at the plant then the entire outside (wheel face) was painted black. If a buyer of a base-hubcap car chose to have optional wheel covers installed at the dealer then the dealer was supposed to paint the wheels black but this was not always done. Therefore, sometimes cars had full wheel covers added at the dealership but the wheels were left body color.

Yeah, I know:

I had a '69 Firebird that I bought from the family of the original owner. It was a code 59 Limelight (Frost) Green car with a black vinyl top and dk green interior. It had 14x7 steel wheels (not XT, but the Pontiac identical equivalent) with dog dishes. They were painted black and I couldn't find any evidence that they were ever painted Green.

That was also the car I spoke of before, where I found out that you got a TH400 with the 350-2V IF you also ordered A/C. Whenever I think I've got it all figured out, I usually find an original weird car that tells me there's always exceptions to the hard "rules" in my head.

Most all of the wheels were paintd body color on the face that came with the dog dish hubcaps.. However, on some weird occasions I have seen the steel wheels painted black and not body color. This I believe is pretty rare though.. The backsides of the wheels were left black and the paint sprayed on the front would "bleed through" onto the backside...

I own a '67 Camaro that has been in my family since new. It came with dog dish caps (not XT wheels) and wheels were painted body color.
