I have a similar unit from the eighties, but don't really know much about them.

there was a bunch of companies making CD boxes in 60s-70s.
I believe the theory was something like, when a car cranks over it get 12V to the points for a better spark. When running it gets about 8V to the points or points would burn out too fast. The CD box would give higher voltage to the points without burning them out so they claimed more HP, better mileage, longer point life, etc |

I have a Delco-Remy CD setup. With it, the points are just a low voltage trigger for the ignition box. They would wear out before ever burning out. I suspect that these all worked on the same principal. An electronics guy could probably elaborate on this.
