Exhaust : Factory look with an aggressive sound???

Hello to all~!
Ok, I have a 99% original Z except for the exhaust.
The car has old headers on it and I plan on leaving those alone. Last summer I had a custom exhaust made for the car. I went with 2.5 inch pipe out the headers to twin 2 chamber mufflers. From the mufflers the exhaust goes to 2 and 1/4 then down to the factory 1 and 7/8 in tips. I wanted the car to sound mean but look stock. It actually does sound pretty dang good and looks very original from the side.

SO, here is my dilemma. I am now not too crazy about the look of the twin flowmasters from the rear/underneath. I do not really want the transverse muffler because all of the ones I have heard are just too quiet in my opion.
I have been looking into getting the bullet style mufflers. That way I can have the clean look from the rear and hopefully a aggressive sound. (bullet mufflers are about 2-4in around and really blend in with the exhaust pipe...)
BUT all of the bullet mufflers I have found are either race mufflers or mufflers that are quieter than what I already have. I do not want the car quieter. If anything it could be a tad louder.

I know, I know...why did I not go with Gardner etc... Well because I am really into musclecars with an aggressive sound. So I am willing to sacrifice originality on a good sounding exhaust, but I would like for it to look somewhat original. Headers are on the car anyway which of course are not factory.

Questions:
Does anyone run the bullet race mufflers that are out there?
Or,is there a transvers muffler that will sound as aggressive as dual 2 chamber flowmasters. As of last summer there was not one out there.
Or, if you have any other ideas please fire away...
I may just have to end up leaving it alone.

Look into the Pypes system for that year Camaro. I put it in my Nova and it is pretty nice. Has tranverse muffler that is "somewhat" quite during idle and casual cruising, Nail it, and it really wakes up sound wise, pretty agressive but not obnoxious, Doesn't sound "tinny' like a Flowmaster set up either. Thay have sound bites on thier website, check Marlin's 70 Deuce and you will get an idea. Good luck

The pypes do sound good but for me you cant beat the flowmaster sound. I have 3 inch super 40s on my 496 and it sounds menacing.

You could also do a chambered style exhaust if your worried about seeing the mufflers... I believe that would also be period correct for your 69.. That would be good and loud and sound very intimidating!!

I have to agree with you. If nothing else, you have to have a good, throaty sound on a musclecar.. There is nothing like it!!

I'm in the midst of installing the MAGNAFLOW 15895 Crossflow 2 1/2" Stainless Steel mandrel bent X-pipe system.

Not disputing PYPES sound or performance, but didnt like what I read about muffler alignment on Camaros.net threads.

MAGNAFLOW muffler will hang parallel with diff and square with body. MAGNAFLOW' supplies hangars that bolt to existing OEM hangar locations in front of mufflers.

Tailpipe hangars are poor and I've yet to come up with a solution.

MAGNAFLOW tailpipes end simliar to 67-68 Camaro. PYPES sells a polished slip fit extension. I plan to butt weld polished 304 stainless to my MAGNAFLOW tailpipes to replicate the 69 look.

I do like the flowmaster sound.
I heard that their crossover muffler was two 40's put together.
But I called flowmaster before I purchased and they said that dual 2 chambers would be much more aggressive. If there is a really aggressive sounding transvers muffler out there I am there!

If it's an aggressive sound you seek,you might want to try contacting Waldron's Antique Exhaust.
They manufacturer DCE-Driver Controlled Exhaust dual mufflers,just like the short lived 1970 Pontiac dual VOE gimmick.
I don't think they offer it on their single Transverse muffler though..

The transverse Flowmaster muffler system has a good sound to it. I would go that route if I had to do it again.
