I have just gotten our white El Camino from the paint shop & it looks great. My question is regarding the black stripe goes across tailgate....is it gloss, semi or what? any particular brand ? I also have a black stripe to put down the side, but not sure if it came on my car or was an option.
GOOD ADVICE NEEDED. Its a 13K actual mile factory 4 sp. that deserves the best. Thank you for your help. |

-----Bruce,,,I would say "almost" gloss lacquer, and dont color-sand, just a bit of polish after the rest of the paint has been finished off. Leave some orange-peal.
-----Oh,,,And we need pics of that bad boy!!!.......Bill S |

I looked into this when I was doing my tailgate. The answers I got were, the paint on an SS El Camino tailgate should be the same paint that was used on the SS Chevelle tail panel, which is a satin black. Also the same satin that was used on the optional SS side stripe.

-----Hey Bill,,,The black on that blue El C is exactly what I was trying to impart to my Texas bud. Although I have been lusting after your El C all the way through your resto, Im not of the opinion that the rear panel was the same luster as the vinyl side-stripe. Not much different, but different. The white 70 SS I bought new looked absolutely the same as your blue pic.
-----My memory isnt what it once was but I also seem to remember that the black paint didnt have a horizontal tape line on the body in the tailgate jamb. Much the same as a Z/28 hood stripe onto the cowl it was just sprayed right across the whole rear and misted into the jamb.......Bill S |
