Default IL Trailer Inspection

FYI: I learned this morning that the State of IL is now enforcing a long standing law requiring trailers with 'TC' or greater weight limits to carry verification of safety inspection. They are checking for tread wear, lights and the break-away brake. This inspection is required every six (6) months, similar to the truck safety inspection. I would expect the inspection fee to be the same or similar to the truck safety inspection fee (I last paid $21). The fine is $250 and the court cost is $250...$500 dollars out of your pocket! Locally, they are currently stopping all trailers in Volo at the intersection of Rtes. 12 & 120, where they are getting the boat traffic to and from Fox Lake and Lake Geneva, WI. This appears to be for both commercial and private trailers registered in the state. I have three (3) to take care of today. Consider yourself warned!

Please forward this information to all that you know who trailer (IL residents).

According to the Illinois Vehicle Code, the above applies in the following counties and townships:

Sec. 13‑100.1. Definitions. As used in this Chapter, "affected areas" means the counties of Cook, DuPage, Lake, Kane, McHenry, Will, Madison, St. Clair, and Monroe and the townships of Aux Sable and Goose Lake in Grundy County and the township of Oswego in Kendall County.

I have also been told that the test is annually for trailers, but do know that it is bi-annually...every 6 months...on trucks.

Thanks for the heads up!

I assume that means only those who live in the affected counties - not traveling through them?

Great weekend to get those traveling to the Chain and L.G.

My only concern is how are they going to know what part of Illinois you are from when they pull you over. Not an issue if everything works on the trailer. Guess we better get that breakaway brake fixed.
