First of all, thank you for reading my long post. I own a 72 Chevy Vega 350 and for the past 10 years I been pulling my hair out trying to decide what to do with the car as far as cloning it into something unique. I want to make the car special and am facinated with Yenko, Motion and Scuncio cars.. and was thinking of cloning mine into one of these but have a delima with each one. So, recently I had a dent in the fender I had to fix so its in the classic paint shop now and I figured while its in there being worked on why not paint the scheme I want now.. but Im going out of my mind trying to decide which colors, scheme and all..so Id like to run by each thought to everyone and listen to comments, advice, critism and anything.
First let me show you my car so you can get an idea of its color . Its painted a Sikkens orange pearl copper color… sort of unique.. it has a 355 in it, M21 tranny, Moeser 373 gears, line locks, 12 point roll cage, lunati cams 500 rise, holley double pumper 850 , balanced chambered heads, Don Hardy kit and a Motion Cowl hood just mentioning a few things off top my head..15’s in the rear , 14’s in front here are some pics of it My car: http://img17.imageshack.us/img17/2689/picture051pg.jpg http://img834.imageshack.us/img834/5...cture004dr.jpg http://img259.imageshack.us/img259/5759/dcp2049.jpg http://img266.imageshack.us/img266/9977/dcp2251.jpg http://img535.imageshack.us/img535/430/1001133ut.jpg http://img194.imageshack.us/img194/1148/picture6788.jpg The ideas I had are 1). Motion -- I really like the Motion cars and there are a few Motion vega clones out there.. a couple are very nice but there are only two choise colors of the paint is white and black and Im not loving either of these.. its also a lot of paint to put on a car and not sure I want to put all that paint on my car.. I have a few motion parts on this car as I got reciepts from motion for some of the parts that are on it.. and it has the correct valve covers.. all I would need is the emblems, change out the air cleaner.. but the wheels are wrong and don’t feel like changing that .. but I thought that if I put the motion scheme on it.. over time I could pick up parts and pieces on Ebay and such and slowly add some stuff to the car.. that fact that it has a few motion parts on it now excitied me some.. but Im just not sure about white or black.. here are two I found on the web in orange.. the white looks great on this orange but Im not a big fan of the black and the vintage one (real motion) that flat black doesn’t excite me any.. so Im on the fence here.. White that looks good http://img26.imageshack.us/img26/703...nvegawhite.jpg black I don’t like – this gloss black just doesn’t good to me no offense to the owner.. I don’t think id like it on my car.. http://img688.imageshack.us/img688/4631/blk2f.jpg vintage black real motion http://img52.imageshack.us/img52/8549/motionblack.jpg 2). Yenko -- The Yenko involves a lot less paint , I was going to put ralley stripes on it anyway and then all going down the side would be a single Yenko stripe… the thing I like about Yenko is everyone knows what that is.. and when a car pulls into a car show with yenko on it…it turns a lot of heads.. even though it’s a clone.. people love that.. and they all gather around the car wanting to check it out.. Most people don’t know vegas did not come with v8’s in them from Yenko.. in fact when you tell them in a discussion they are amazed to hear they were with 4 cyl’s.. so technically I thought this could be a cool road to go down and put some yenko valve covers on.. do the yenko scheme and make it a clone.. but then I worry its not really correct.. and would people snear at this idea like owning a Carroll Sheby Chevelle.. its all wrong.. Id like to hear some ideas on this.. good idea or bad idea.. I did see 2 v8 yenko clone vegas on the net.. one is really sweet .. pic below but again.. how is that looked upon? Yenko http://img840.imageshack.us/img840/5899/yenko.jpg 3). Scuncio -- well here was another thought… so far as I know there are no documented Motions vegas out there.. from what Joel Rosen told me..but ther are lots of clones and there are No Scuncio Vegas known.. I guess only 10 were made, but I have not seen one other than a magazine article , no one has made a clone and there isn’t any real photos ive seen of one… so.. If I cloned a Scuncio.. Id have the only clone out there.. and it would be a nice tribute to something almost no ones has ever seen.. My thoughts were to put rallys on it… and a Hi performance Scuncio badge on the rear and there is a sticker I found.. I was going to use this as a basis for running a stripe down the side of the car.. Scuncio Badge http://img803.imageshack.us/img803/3820/1000749.jpg Scuncio Emblem: http://img856.imageshack.us/img856/4...ncioemblem.jpg I was going to have the painter design a template of this sticker design and rather than using green I would use the cars color.. start this off the back rear and then run the black stripes to the front to a point and leave the V8 in white ..so the scheme would look like the sticker Scuncio V8 then flare off to the front of the car the same black stripes to a point on the front fender.. on both side.. I can even have a couple of the sticker made at a graphics shop and put in the rear quarter windows.. get some Scuncio info, articles ect.. for show and make this a tribute to Scuncio.. but then again most people don’t even know who or what Scuncio is at car shows.. They only know Yenko… youd be surprised how many never heard of Motion.. but I thought it might be a cool design to do and tribute that no one else has done.. thoughts? 4). There is no option 4 but if someone has one.. Id love to hear.. Other than that I an going to put ralleys on it and flar them off the front spoiler.. , down the rear hatch and over the rear spoiler like below..nothing on the roof Stripes: http://img33.imageshack.us/img33/4066/stripes1w.jpg http://img32.imageshack.us/img32/372...60006large.jpg http://img51.imageshack.us/img51/333...ega700x469.jpg but Im having a hard time picking out a color.. like I said that glossy black I don’t like on orange.. , whites ok.. my painter was thinking on the lines of a dark pearl silver.. almost looks black, but not these two colors he thought would look best.. Paint Dk Shadow Grey Met http://img72.imageshack.us/img72/801...dowgreymet.jpg Earth Pearl http://img685.imageshack.us/img685/9643/earthpearl.jpg but what looks good with orange.. ? comments… also another question he was showing me PPG paints, my cars painted with Sikkins.. does it make a difference?? Well Im just not sure what theme to put on this car to make it unique or should I just leave it alone… any comments Im going to appreciate.. thanks Oh yeh I did find a color that is closest to my car color here.. it’s a little more copperish but One fine looking vega.. this thing is sweet closest color near my car : http://img39.imageshack.us/img39/186/p10100791.jpg http://img535.imageshack.us/img535/2871/p10100801.jpg |

I've messed with these Vega's quite a bit many years ago and my honest opinion is that they look best with the simple, GT "skunk" stripe over the hood and rear deck. If you make it into any kind of clone, replica, tribute (pick your word), by the end of the first cruise season you will be burned out of answering the question of "Is is real?". Then folks will tell you what you did wrong or what you're missing to be accurate. Anyway, my vote is for the factory GT stripe . . . . cheap, effective and looks great on these cars!

I agree with Mark, avoid the "clone" label. If you like a stripe scheme, just paint it in whatever color you like. Unique is better than a clone.

For those who LOVE the look of a car and want to clone it, I have no issue with it. In your case, where you appear to have some reservations on certain paint schemes, I think it would not be wise to attempt a clone. A well done clone- keeping close to the original can be nice, but as soon as it becomes a hybrid of clone styling and creative liberties- the project often "jumps the shark" and is not well received.
The option I would go with is build a car follows the theme of what was running around the streets of NY around 1972 or so. Check out some old magazines and look for some stripe styles you like and go form there. Keep all of the Motion stuff you have and use it to highlight the fact that it has many of the elements a guy from LI would have used back then. I could see you using this stripe pattern and it working out pretty well. I agree witt Mark and the GT stripe, but you kinda loose some of original lines which compliment that stripe since you went with the cowl hood. |

I like the stripes on the DH Vegas..Very Cool
Then again, probably not the best idea in town... I'd go with what you like best. Build it for you and enjoy the hell out of it. BIG |

I like the way your car looks now, and as someone above stated, the factory GT stripe is cool.
But, from the above ones, the Yenko Vega looks cool. And even thought the Yenko Camaro clone is way over done, the Yenko Vega still looks fresh. Or, go off the charts and do a panel paint job ala 1970's with big white or silver panels on the current orange

I agree with several of these guys. Instead of "cloning" something and having to explain it to every Tom, Dick, & Harry, build a custom that you like. As for colors, I'm a Hugger Orange with Dover White stripes kind of guy myself.

X 2 with pxtx.....don't cross up the era. Either go modern with the Weld wheels, etc., or do Cragars or Super Tricks, L88 hood, etc.
If you have to break up the paint, I would look at some type of 70's styling, panel paint, etc. As far as having to explain things to other people, having to listen to a critic if it's 100's correct or the "real deal", who cares if everyone gets it or likes it. If any Detroit super car experts try to get into the "it's not real" discussion with me, I plan on telling them that my uncle, LUIGI "Baby Shacks" MANOCCHIO worked part time at Motion and built the car out the back door, so no paper work or witnesses are around..lol

I agree with the 70's style paint idea. Metal flake, endless lines, little bit of lace or cobwebs. Takes a good designer to make it flow, but when it's right, NOBODY has got the same thing.
