A friend asked me if all 1970 Camaros (I assume he means 1970.5) had 12-bolts. Anyone know?
I'd guess that smaller engines didn't get 12-bolts, but I also know Chevy was much more consistent with rear end specs than BOP so I dunno. |

70 Camaro SS 350 (L-48/4bbl) got the 12 Bolt

All three got 10 Bolt rears*. The 350 SS, the two 396 SS and Z28 got 12 Bolt rears:
![]() ![]() As you can see from the chart above the 8.125" Gear = 10 Bolt while the 8.875" Gear = 12 Bolt Only the Z28 and the L78 396 offered optional hi performance rear end gears from the factory. You will notice that the L78 is missing from the above data. It came standard with a 3.55 12 Bolt Posi (mandatory option) rear with 4.10 gears optional which had Posi mandatory. RPO ZQ9 was the optional 4.10 gears for the Z28 and the L78 1970 would be the last year for the 12 Bolt rear in a Camaro. Beginning in 1971 all Camaros got the new 8.5" geared 10 Bolt Corporate rear. *Now . . . . with all that said I believe there was a way for you to get a 12 Bolt rear in a 350-2V Camaro which was the only Camaro to offer a "performance" rear. The ratio was 3.31 and it was only available with the TH Auto Trans instead of the standard 2.73. This may . . . . I repeat . . . may be RPO YD1: Special Trailer Towing Axle. If you look at the original 1970 Camaro brochure (before it was revised) and some early magazine ads you will see that an option for the SS was to be the LS6 454. Some say Chevy made a few before the option was cancelled - pure BS. The option was cancelled before the car was put into production. There are no engine codes for a 1970 Camaro SS with an LS6 454. Another urban legend was the 1970 LS7 454 Corvette.
