‘69 L78 w/window sticker on Lost Muscle Cars FB page. Guy’s Grandpa bought a ‘66 GT350, ‘69 SS396, and a ‘70 AAR back in the day. Cool Grandpa for sure, spreading the love to FoMoCo, GM, and Mopar during the heydey.

Biil, they were automatically included, but owners still had the option to delete them & get a credit,as this one did. That was possible before Jan 1st of 1969,after which it became A federal mandate.
I'll bet this car was ordered sometime in Late Nov,mid Dec. 1968. |

Rick, my understanding has always been that Chevrolet included the head restraints as standard equipment at the start of 1969 model year production, but prior to 1/1/69 buyers could delete them for a $16.90 credit. This window sticker shows them as a $16.90 option (additional charge) and then deleted for a $16.90 credit, so a net of zero to the buyer (no extra charge and no credit).
The only way this would make sense is if the head restraints were a $16.90 mandatory option prior to 1/1/69, but if so, it's news to me. I can recall seeing the credit on a couple early production window stickers in the past, but not the additional charge. That said, the window sticker pictured above looks totally legit to me ![]()

See window stickers here: http://www.chevellestuff.net/1969/misc/paperwork.htm
First one, ATL car, shows head restraints with a charge of 16.90. VIN makes it a November 68 car. Second one, also ATL car, shows no charge for head restraints, but then head restraints are deleted for -16.90. However, do note that the base cost of the car is $17.00 higher. VIN makes it a January 69 car. Which would be contrary to the headrests being "non-deletable" starting 1/1/69. Maybe the order was input in December? A copy of the TSB regarding the headrests is also on that page, just below the two window stickers. It says if a customer insists, the headrests should be removed and "the sales price of the option deleted from the total sales price." That language suggests that there was (at that time, TSB dated 10/10/68) a line item charge for the headrests "option" on every car. That would support the format of the window sticker above - an automatic charge on every window sticker, then an offsetting credit if removed. The $17.00 increase in the car base price on the second window sticker likely coincided with the 1/1/69 changes, and covered previous headrests "option" cost, thus eliminating the need to list it as an "option" for $16.90.
