Default value of 396 / 375 1968 Engine complete

I just looked at a 396 engine, cast coded 1968 with GMT High Performance cast iron heads for 375 HP. Engine is clean and came out of a 1969 chevelle. The owner tells me engine ran strong before coming out and has about 5500 miles on it. Original GM high rise manifold, carb, and a new distributor. The guy wants $3500. for it, I would be placing it in a 1969 SS Camaro that was originally an SS350. --the question is, based on my description, is the engine worth the $$$

I just built an L89 396 375 hp motor and the parts alone cost way more than that and that doesn't include the difference in the cost of the heads. I think that would be a decent deal.

I just purchased a 69 Camaro with that engine. Check the codes but that seems like a very reasonable price.

I have two 396-375 engines and it cost me $4k just to have one completely rebuilt at a reputable machine shop. If the engine doesn't need rebuilt and the parts are correct I would probably buy it. IMO if the guy says it has been rebuilt he should have some kind of paperwork to back that up...it seems you can't trust anyone on there word anymore....I would never put an engine in my car that I know nothing about without tearing it down first.

Owner of the engine now states 5500 since re-build. He has no paperwork, I'm following up to see if the guy he got it from has the work. Engine and car it came from is local.
