Janes ZL-1 drag car
Hate to admit it but I was wrong (who cares I hear you say, but for the records ) Jane did in fact use the Blue car as a Drag Racer. Several years ago on these very boards I disputed that, oh well.
The latest issue of Australian Muscle Car has 17 pages and cover devoted to Janes ZL-1s. The Orange one is restored and doing the rounds of major exhibits here and looks very nice.
Now on to the correction.
The Blue auto was raced by Jane in 1970 & 1971 in A/Stock, three photos to prove it. Car ran 11.96 ...our tracks were very slick because they were not frequently used.
Storey provided by Joe Pirotta who did some of the drag set up work on the car and got to drive it.....briefly.
"I hopped in..remember I was used to driving a 289, not a 427 and this thing was brand new. I took off and the revs came up so quick. I had a look down at the rev counter to see what rpm I was doing. It was 7-5 within the space of what felt like about 5 feet. By the time I looked up again I was in the grass! I nearly rolled it. Janey came up to me and said 'what do you think you're doing?? This is a bloody expensive car', and understandably he turfed (threw ) me out
of it. I never drove it again"
Now I could explain how my logic lead me to my gaff, (won't bore you ) but yep it raced.
At least was correct about it being dumped in a tip after an accident. Maybe if these things keep on going up it may make financial sense to buy the building that now sits over it and dig it up!!
Sorry about not scanning a photo but will ask the kids about this on the weekend
