Just in time before I move back, my car is due up in August!! The below is an exert from John Anderson, a member of the 1st Gen Camaro Club of Phoenix.
Hi there - just so everyone knows - the new emissions exemption program is in effect and operating. I successfully got my 68 registered on Friday - the new program went into effect on Tuesday. Its the DMV - so take along the print out from the website (see link) and a bucket of patience. None of them were familiar with it - so it took my over 2 hours and considerable faxing back and forth between them and my insurance company. But - drive the 68 on open road legally yesterday, so all is forgiven - - - AZ Emissions News ![]()

Below is another guy's experience with the DMV or should I say MVD (What's up with that acronym anyway). Looks like there is a learning curve to deal with. Hopefully they will have figured it out by the time I have to register my car in August. At least my policy (Hagerty) states it is a "Collecter Car" policy right up front under the company logo.
Subject: RE: MORE EMISSIONS EXEMPTION INFO Date: Mon, 09 Apr 2007 20:45:33 -0500 Just to be clear - I tried the "Service Arizona" link to do it online, and it failed. Still said it needed emissions testing - so when I went to DMV, they told me it wasn't in effect, and it if was they didn't have procedures and even if they had procedures, they've never done it before and they didn't have the form there, and it was getting close to lunch, and don't I know how much pressure state workers are under and blah blah blah blah blah. I just showed them the print out from the web site with the announcement, and at least the supervisor was smart enough to call someone downtown. Highlight the department lead's (Stacey Stanton) name in the press release like I did - that got their attention. The statement that "Arizona insurance companies must report the special coverage to MVD electronically before the registration renewal - with emissions exemption - can occur" is not true - there is no way for your insurance company (yet) to electronically submit collector coverage notification to the state. You have to do it in person. You need to make absolutely sure your insurance company is in tune. The insurance binder or rider letter MUST state COLLECTOR coverage, not antique, not special interest, not limited use etc. etc. State Farm asked me for pictures and a written valuation sheet before they would bind such coverage. Lynn Henessy in Ahwatukee did a great job (ask for Melissa) PLUG! So - and last point - my registration expired 10 months ago and the car just sat in the garage. The DMV told me I owed 40$ for a penalty ($4 per month) for driving it with no registration - I told them that I never drove it and they made me sign a simple form and waived the penalty. Just another useful tip - this collectors exemption applies to cars from 1968 to 1992 (im pretty sure - it said 15 years and older) so rush out andget the 1984 show quality corsica registered!

I registered 2 cars in Maricopa County this week without having to pass emissions: a 1979 Porsche on Monday April 9, and a 1969 Camaro on Tuesday April 10.
I used the MVD location near Scottsdale and Bell. In both cases, when they asked me if I passed emissions, I said I was applying for the "collector car emissions exemption". My cars are insured with Tamra at MK Insurance, a sponsor here on the site. I brought a copy of my insurance card and the completed insurance application on which I highlighted the policy's limitations (eg not primary car, not commuting car, parked in locked garage, 1000mi limit, etc). In both cases, the clerk went back to check with a supervisor and returned within a couple of minutes with my new plate. The second time around, they gave me a bit of difficulty because I didn't have a "letter from the insurance company" -- perhaps Tamra could draft up a boilerplate as a benefit to her Arizona customers? ![]() Last edited by Denis; 10-31-2018 at 05:59 AM. |
