Well I got lucky and found a donor car for the sheetmetal I need for dads 77 Z/28. I tried to buy just the quarters but he didn't want to be stuck with the rest of it so I had to buy the whole shell. My wife wasn't too impressed with my "great" find. It looks bad but there is only surface rust. Original paint too. It does seem silly to cut up a rust free car to fix a rusty one but what do you do? Some people say just switch shells but I can't do that, doesn't seem right. It wouldn't be dads car then. Anyways here's some pics. Hopefully I can sell the subframe and posi rear to recoop some of my money. I had to leave it in the drive yesterday for a birthday party in the garage. My neighbors looked horrified.

Congratulations on the "great" find. "LMAO with the "only surface rust" comment.
Your dads car will be just fine with the donated metal. Have fun and take care. |

I think you are 100% correct in the way you are going to do things with the donor car.You are right it would not be your Dad's car if you did it the other way!And as far as your wife! Well you just have to be a "GREAT SALESMAN" and be able t make Her see what the finished product will look and be like! Good find by the way! I would not get rid of it until the bitter end just to make sure you got everything off of it you need!

Yes, are are not only right in a morale sense to use the sheetmetal and not the whole shell, to save your Dad's Z, but also in a legal sense as well. Swapping a VIN tag to a new shell would be a REALLY bad (read that as illegal) idea.
You are doing a great job. Keep posting the progress photos. I need to see that someone else is as crazy as me! P.S. When you get around to stripping that shell, I could use the driver's side, emergency brake cable metal cover. For some reason they forgot to install it on my car at the factory: Here's a photo of the location, and of the part itself (this is the passenger side version, though): ![]() ![]() |

Being severe weather season I want it back in as soon as possible. I plan on cutting it apart piece by piece and putting it up in the attic. Once I know what I need and don't I'll get rid of the rest. At a minimum I need the quarters (which is why I bought it). I am also keeping the floor pans because I need a few small patches. I figure keep it all until I know for sure. |

NJSTEVE,
I'm not sure if the part is there but if it is I will be more than happy to send it to you. I figure it is the least I could do to help out another member here, as others have done for me. If there's anything else you may need let me know. It may be a few days until I get to get started but I will check for that first. |

Lewis, you have a PM on that hanging tailpipe.
Steve - you have a '77 Z?

PM sent back. If anyone thinks there may be something you need let me know. I am holding the sheetmetal until I know everything I need but other than that it's available. Any opinions on the subframe or posi rear values? Not sure of the ratio yet.
