Default 409-348?

O.K. Vern Heres one for you. NAPA owner showed me a Intake part # 3780540 Covins doesn't show it. We took the bottom cover off and it's dated 10-10-60. It should be a 1961 intake right? The heads are 3795586 dated B-21-61 What was the production of 409s in 1961.

This is from a google search.

"This picture is of the aluminum #3780540 intake used on the 1959 305hp (with manual trans) and the 320hp 348."

All info I find states 58-59 348. You are right Howie, with that date one would believe it was for a 1960. I think it was just a late casting for over the counter use.

Kim,
There's a lot of controversy regarding that manifold due to some inaccurate published data. I can assure you, that intake was used on the '61 340hp 348 and the first '61 409s. Most people believe the '59 story, but I'm absolutely certain my info is accurate.
Also, the 586 heads are '61 409. Quite rare and valuable.
Hope this helps.

Verne

Kim,
Forgot one question. '61 409s were 142 in production cars. Tonawanda made over 300 motors though. The earliest ones were cast in Nov. '60 but production was ceased in July '61. There were many casting problems with them, and before July, the 068 ('62 blocks) were already nearing production so they threw in the towel on those '61 623 castings.
