Complete DIY guide to Locks & Keys - 1969 Camaro

As a Certified Master Locksmith, I am writing this thread to help many of you out with locks and keys for your 69 Camaro's. I wrote this information 20 years ago when I used to code NOS lock kits for other car guys and sold them through eBay. I still have a few groups of NOS locks stashed away here if someone is stuck for locks on a restoration project but should inform you that I have since gotten away from locksmith work in the past 20 years and will only do the odd set for people I know or anyone in a bind that needs help. This info is intended as reference material only and this is not a business for me, just part of the hobby.

To be honest, I've forgotten more than I know about this stuff but every once in a while the old memory serves me well (like a brain fart). With that said, I'd like to share this info while having recently refreshed my locksmith skills doing the locks in one of my own cars. Funny how all of this stuff comes back to you after time. It's like riding a bike I guess. Anyways, here's some general info on the locks and keys used in 1969 Chevrolet's (serves more than just Camaro) and is similar for Chevelle, Nova and other GM lines with only the lock casing and tail pieces changing between many models. If I have time later, I'll try an include additional information for earlier model years since the dash mounted locks and key blanks differ prior to 69. I may try and stab together some info for early 70's models as well.

In 1969 GM added the locking steering column and this is when they started with this sequence of keying. Subsequent years changed key sections and the four main groups of keyways changed (repeated) themselves every four model years up into the 1980's. Once VAT's and electronic transponder keys became common, it all changed and got a lot more complex. I got away from the trade around this time and never stayed current on newer models so I can only share what I used to work on back in the 70's and 80's. So without further ado, here are a few pictures for reference with some general notes written.
