Default high speed video from 1978

On an August morning in 1978, French director Claude Lelouch mounted a gyro-stabilized camera to the bumper of a Ferrari 275 GTB and had a friend, a professional Formula 1 racer, drive at breakneck speed through the heart of Paris.

The film was limited for technical reasons to 10 minutes. The driver barrel-assed all the way from Porte Dauphine (on the city's western edge, adjacent to the Bois de Bologne) to the Basilica Sacre Coeur in Montmartre.

No streets were closed, for Lelouch was unable to obtain a permit. The driver completed the course in about 9 minutes, reaching nearly 140 mph in some stretches. The footage reveals him running real red lights, nearly hitting real pedestrians, and driving the wrong way up several one-way streets.

Upon showing the film in public for the first time, Lelouch was arrested. He has never revealed the identity of the driver, and the film went underground until a DVD release a few years ago.

Few things in the world sound as wonderful as a Ferrari engine. The driver was quite skilled - and also a complete a$$ hole.

That video has been around for at least 25 years now. They used to advertise a VHS tape in the back pages of major automotive magazines. If memory serves me, it was a staggering $49-$69 tape for about 10 minutes of footage, back when VHS tapes were $10. They must have made money, because their ad ran for years, that is until the internet came along, and people began selling copies of the tape on E-Bay (and other sites) for $5, and now we can see it for free.

Totally illegal, very dangerous, but in reality this guy was 20 years ahead of his time. Now we see stunts like this everyday on MTV, Spike, YouTube, World's Wildest Police Chases, etc where people endanger other people's lives, all for their 15 minutes of fame.

Times have sure changed, haven't they? Makes ya proud to be an American.

The car has always been the star of that cult video, that twelve sounds sweet even whe he overrevs it a couple of times. Too bad Claude dubbed in the tire screechs, the cat driving it put me to sleep.
At least he could have dialed in some full lock power slides through some of the tight stuff- lord know that thing is a pig and has gobs of torque.

Now THIS is skill!

I agree late brake. The french vid I don't think was that fast. He dubbed in sound and the cam was mounted way down low to make is seems faster then it was.
