I found this copy of an Ad for Don Yenko Super Cars.Notice it also says Yenko Sports Cars,Inc on bottom left.
On the Bottom right it says"Our Hi-Po Dealers with the Mean Ones" And then it lists all these Dealers from all over the country.They were from:Alabama,Connecticut,Florida,Georgia,Illinois, Indiana,Iowa,Kansas,Kentucky,Massachusetts,Missour i,Minnesota,New Jersey,New York,Ohio-had 6 dealerships,Pennsylvannia,Tennessee,Virginia and Wisconsin. It gives specific names and towns of Dealerships but I didn't list them here. Is it correct to believe that all these Dealerships were receiving COPO's,and then buying the stripe kits from Don Yenko and Applying themselves to sell as the real Deal? Or did Don Yenko send cars already done to these Dealerships to sell....or did they do both? <IMG SRC=http://albums.photopoint.com/j/View?u=1608634&a=12269112&p=55819675&Sequ> [Edited by mr70 (10-30-2001 at 10:20 AM).] |

To my knowledge, Yenko sent the cars to his dealer network pre-striped, badged, ect... Remember the pic BKH has of the Yenko cars on the hauler all striped up. Yenko would note certain cars that were shipped with 'no stripes', and I don't think there were very many of them.
I have a copy of a 'Sales Agreement' between Don Yenko and Josh Darden of Colonial Chevrolet where they specifically outline the sales territory for Colonial. No other dealership within this territory would receive Yenko cars. If there was a formal territory agreement between Yenko and one of his network dealers, wouldn't there also be a formal agreement regarding Douglas installing the Yenko stripes? I know we have talked about this before, but has anyone heard of such a written agreement? M

Good question Marlin. How many written agreements have been found for ALL the Yenko dealers? We have the evidence we are usually seeking out, from the mouth [and hand] of one of the parties that was there, Jack Douglas. I know this offends "purists" who want to protect the integrity of cars that went thru Pa., but, there is little doubt now that this practice did occur. The question is, how these Douglas striped Yenkos should be viewed by history. If there were 26 more COPO cars that were striped by Douglas & sold as authentic Yenkos back in '69, do you think that would really hurt the Pa. Yenko's value?

Mike;
I'm not suggesting that all of the dealers in Yenko's network had a written agreement, but the Colonial agreement suggests that those dealers with special arrangements might have had them put into writing. I was wondering if Jack Douglas recalls any such written agreement. I know when I spoke with Josh Darden he did not recall his written agreement with Yenko, but after seeing it vaguely remembered it. Maybe Jack had a similar deal. I don't think additional Douglas/Yenko's will affect the values of the PA/Yenko's, I think it might be the other way around. Some people might be suspicious about a Douglas/Yenko because so little is known about them, and might prefer the more common PA/Yenko. I think it might be difficult to convince a prospective buyer that a Douglas/Yenko is equal to a PA/Yenko unless there was something in writing from Jack Douglas regarding his arrangement with Don Yenko. Just my $.02!! M

We just recently returned from a "treasure hunt" with some more Yenko paperwork.
Included in it is a brief history of Yenko Chevrolet, written by Don himself. In this "essay", dated September 19, 1969, was a paragraph relating to the Jack Douglas cars. Here is what it says, verbatim: "It should be pointed out that Yenko Sportscars did not have any type of exclusive COPO and that many other dealers have purchased cars similar to the cars purchased by Yenko Sportscars. One Yenko dealer, however (Jack Douglas in Hinsdale, Illinois), after making a direct factory purchase of 22 vehicles identical to those sold him previously by Yenko Sportscars, found it advantageous to purchase YENKO emblems and trim to enhance retailing the merchandise." |
