Gentlemen,
I have a quesion regarding the date code on a 68 396 block I have for my 68 Chevelle SS. The build date on the trim tag is 03D. THe Intake is dated B158, one head is B278, the other is C18. The only thing that resembles a date code on the block is on the pass side, about in the middle of the block. I would expect to see M/D/Y like everything else, but all that's there is 01 8. There's like a raised rectangle with the 01, then a solid dot about the same size as the font, followed by the 8. Does this sound right? I don't see a problem with a Jan. cast block for a Mar build car.... The number on the deck is T0314 ED followed by my partial VIN. Does anyone else have a big block with a similar date code stamp? Thanks in advance!

After a Closer look with a magnifying lamp, the zero is in fact a "C". It's a really crappy casting, as the opening for the C is barely there, but it can be seen, and makes a lot more sense. So,the block was cast C1 8, engine assembled 0314, and the car was built 03D.
I'll sleep better tonight knowing this is all correct! ![]()
