My friend Rachel was driving my camaro tonight, and she got pulled over. Cop said she took notice of my car because of excessive noise when driving under an overpass. She took notice of the exhaust, which dumps after the differential (doesn't continue out the back). She didn't get a ticket, just a warning, but here's the question:
"The statute I looked up says nothing about the tailpipes being an issue, But how loud is too loud?" I must say my car is not too loud. It has a heavy rumble, but is not excessive. I just think this whole thing is a load of crap, and laughed when I heard about it. Regardless of the warning, the tailpipes will never be extended out the back, and I will never put any other mufflers on that car but the Flowmaster 40 series that are on it. The warning is framed and hanging on my wall as we speak. ![]()

It will come down to the officers opinion of what to loud really is,but I would imagine the overpass amplified it.
Did she state you have to have it fixed soon or else? |

Didn't say anything about fixing it . . . My guess is she really didn't care too much. Just trying to act busy. Cops in this college town have nothing better to do than pic on us poor college kids!!
Just a written warning ticket. Said I was in violation of statute 347 (basically loud exhaust), but didn't have any specific citing number like 347.65 or anything. And then to contradict the number, she wrote down, "Tailpipe must extend to rear of car" Ha, Had to laugh at that!

Hum, I have a habit of getting on it when going through underpasses or over concrete walled overpasses... just love the echo.

Well, in NJ a car is supposed to have exhaust pipes that exit from underneath the vehicle so your car would have failed inspection if it dumps under the vehicle. I had a 68 Camaro SS396 that had dumps and I couldn't stand to drive it. I had tailpipes added and it sounded so much better from inside the car. It made it sound better from outside as well. Dumps cause the exhaust to bounce of the ground and creates almost an echo effect. Better check those local regulations closer or you may end up with a ticket.

For years I ran around with either open headers or straight glass packs and the only ticket I got was for excessive acceleration
