At Verne's invitation I attended the Jersey Late Greats picnic today in Mercer County park, West Windsor, NJ. Definitely a nice bunch of folks. They welcomed me with open arms even though I was the only Mopar guy there. Here are some photos from the event:
A group shot with all the cars including a Corvair vintage race car. ![]() ![]() Some nice Corvairs from various years, including a van: ![]() ![]() A really slcik early El Camino (1960-61???) with a 348: ![]() ![]() A 1958 and a 60/61? and my old dodge: ![]() ![]() And the piesta-resistance (pardon my butchering of the foreign spelling). Verne's 1962 black and red, Impala SS, 409 four-speed convertible (the real deal). Complete with tow tabs, red sparkly Grant steering wheel and Mickey Thompson rims. He's owned it since 1968 when he bought it off the bargain lot in the back of Reedman Chevrolet in Pennsylvania: ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() And though Verne is embarassed by what he considers the undetailed engine bay of his car, here is a photo. Sorry Verne, but they have to see this. Verne, that's not dirt in there, it's called patina. This is how a 60's-era hotrod should look! ![]() |

Steve...thanks for the pics! Verne's car is killer!
When I saw the pic with your car...the Sesame Street song..."one of these things is not like the other...one of these things just doesn't belong" came to mind...LOL By the way...your Charger is way cool. Is it a twin to the yellow one out here? Thanks for sharing! ![]()

Mine is a 1970 hemi Charger R/T-SE. Dodge made 112 R/T's which included the 15 R/T-SE's built. Kinda like an SS-RS Camaro, the highest performance option package combined with the highest level trim option package. ![]() |

Verne, if you dont like the "recent" engine shot, how about we call this a vintage shot from back in 1968. No one will know the difference.

Yes, that is a '60 EC and the convert next to the '58 is a '60 as well.
Verne: Your '62 is PERFECT. Owned by you since '68? How cool is that! |

Steve,
Thanks for making the trip down to join us and bringing your superb Charger.. ![]() ![]() ![]() But now I know what a sneaky guy you are...... I thought I left the hood closed on my '62 to prevent any embarrassing photo ops. ![]() Thanks for a nice comments guys ![]() Thanks again for posting the pictures Steve. It was such a perfect day, it's too bad a few more local guys from this site weren't able to make it. The best thing about the day was that it proved that whether you're a hard core Corvair guy, a hard core Mopar guy, or anything in between, we all really share the same interests ![]() Second Chance Offer: We're planning on doing the same thing next year! ![]() |

Verne, It was great to meet you and the rest of the gang there. I had a great time. Too much food though! I'm still stuffed.
-there's nothing to be embarrassed at with the underhood condition of your car. Some guys strive for years to duplicate that original look that you perfected 39 years ago when you bought it. You should copyright the look. I sure do love that sparkly steering wheel. Brings back memories! Isn't there a local cruise night coming up or something? I thought Mike mentioned something about one in the near future. -Steve |
