Default NYC area in mid-July: what should we do/see?

My wife and I and a couple of friends are gonna take a short vacation to the New York City area from July 16-20, or thereabouts...any advice from you east coast natives about what we should see, and what is fairly easily to get to? We'll be flying in, so we'll be at the mercy of public transportation! Is DC doable? Maybe Philly? Any specifics sites or happenings that are considered a "must do"?

Thanks in advance!

Stop in Chicago on your connecting flight and bring some food with you...they don't really know much about food out east.

Welcome to our backyard! SO much to do! If your staying in NYC I would try to get around to dinner with a Broadway show. I recommend Smith and Wolinski's or Peter Luger's steak house! Check out Ground Zero, Statue of liberty (if you have never been). Also look into the museums. Central Park? Yankee Game? If there is no game then take a tour of the stadium! Walking on Yankee Stadium's grass is a wicked cool experience. Maybe take an afternoon check out Vette Works or Corvette Repair for some restoration action? Philly is about 2 hours plus or minus traffic, DC is about 4 plus or minus traffic. There is so much to do! If we're home, maybe Tom and Joe can come down too and we have a BBQ at our place? We're 25 minutes from NYC... Good Luck Rob!
