What color are "CL" wheels supposed to be?
The 1972 sales booklet shows the Nova with semi-gloss CL Wheels. Contradicting what I have seen on other 1972 Nova SS cars, early Nova cars and other Chevy models (Camaro). The spare "CL" wheel for our Nova is painted a semi-gloss black too. ![]() So my question is... do the wheels get painted body color or semi-gloss black? Thanks!

From the what it's worth department: my original 70 L78 from back the day had dog dish caps and "black" steel wheels..car was a Forest green car from the factory. Didn't think much about it at the time since I was putting on Cragar SS wheels. What's really funny is the price I paid for that car back then, $1400!!! If I only had a time machine.....

Bud and Tom...
Thats what I was thinking too. It would not make too much sense for Chevrolet to paint one spare a different color than all the other wheels. I am in the same boat as that red car pictured above. Black wheels and a black hat, man that should look clean! With this green tinted silver paint... I think the car should look very sharp! ![]()

My 72 SS had body color CL wheels, it was like a Lemans blue color.

I doubt if we'll get a conclusive answer on this. It's my opinion that the majority of CL wheels came with the Basic (no option) Bow Tie Baby Moon. Body color is the most commonly found and likely ORIGINAL look.......but probably subject to the BLACK alternative......but on which vechicles and why ??????

If you have a build sheet, box #79 will indicate what color the wheels were originally painted. I have several 72 Chevelle build sheets, and rally wheel cars (silver wheels) have XX for the paint code, while cars with full wheel covers have code 19 (code for Tuxedo Black). Lastly, my opinion is that black wheels would not be painted with a satin sheen but rather gloss.
