I see where the name recognition comes into play, but the ZL-1 would smoke a Hemi Cuda stock for stock. My dad bought a 69.5 Roadrunner M-code new(wishes he still had it), and he always said that a stock 440-6 would blister a stock Hemi, but he said with a compression and cam change really would wake a hemi up! I don't think any other manufacturer put a all out race engine in a street car like GM did with the ZL-1, or with the L-88 for that matter. I think GM should have built an L-88 Camaro, has the power of the ZL-1, more durability, just not the lightweight!

Dont need compression or cam change: just toss the original cast iron manifolds and put a real exhaust system on the car. My 70 Hemi Charger has had headers on it since the day it was delivered: https://www.yenko.net/ubbthreads/showflat...0&fpart=all

A couple years ago we chassis dynoed the car with the headers and stock 2-1/4" exhaust: 354 hp at the rear wheels. It ran 12.77 @ 111 mph. We then installed a set of 3" pipes from the collectors back and it pumped out 395 at the rear wheels (only 3 hp less than with the open headers!) It even ran better with the stock original cam than with the higher lift and duration Mopar Performance one! Haven't run the 1/4 with it since but I'd imagine it's a bit quicker now, with the extra 41 hp. Nothing sounds like a hemi at full throttle...well, actually the only thing that sounds close is the old monster named "Spot" that lived under Herman Munster's stairs.

Awesome, 395 at the rear wheels is impressive for a stock engine, didn't mean to offend you, that is just what I was told. Hemi cars are awesome and carry a certain mystique no matter what, all the racing stories you hear from the baby boomers always has a story about a feared Hemi it!
