A notion has been proposed over at Team Chevelle:
"L" code = SS? Baltimore built '69 Chevelles with an "L" on the bottom line of the trim tag are showing a trend of indicating an SS car. Still a long way from proven, but interesting nonetheless. They are looking for both documented SS and non SS Chevelles (Malibus and 300s). Dale MacIntosh has a decent collection of trim tags at "Chevelle Stuff" .? Kansas built '69 Chevelles may have a similar trend, but Baltimore is being looked into for now. Thoughts?

I have always used that as an indicator, just didn't know if it was absolute or not.

Those of you with Baltimore cars (Kansas will be done later on) that wish to share your trim tags and whether your car is a confirmed SS or non-SS, chime in on the Team Chevelle. BTW, you COPO guys would be a great source of documented non-SS 'velles.
Stefano: where had you heard about the significance of the "L" on Baltimore cars?

Here is an update from TC as of today:
UPDATE: hey all, the latest numbers are: 3667-12, 3637-28, 3680-2, Unknown-7, 300 series-3 Total-52, Known SS-18, Known Non-SS-7, Unknown-27 L/Code-10, B L/Code-25, M/code-5, B M/Code-7, BFL/Code-3, No#-2 Trans- Auto-8, Manual-11, Unknown-33 Seat- Bench-26, Bucket-13, Unknown-13 More info is out there and slowly coming in. An assumtion that can be made is that the majority are B L/code and maybe real SS's because they are saved because of that fact. Although there could be some cars that are cloned, all known SS cars on the list have an L/code on the tag and all known Non-SS cars do not have the L/code they have M or B M/code. Thanks to all for continued input and as you can see it is very interesting when you begin to put it together. more to come......

SS-l78 showed it to me on kansas built 69 and 70 chevelle ss cars. When he first told me i thought he was on drugs and then we walked around the mecum auction and every ss chevelle that was built at kansas had an L.The malibu cars did not.
