I'd suggest that you run the hidden VIN through DMV. You might end up doing a good deed and having the car returned to it's previous legal owner...

One car has the vin stamped on the f/wall, the other car has the actual vin tag. Both are the same number, which car is the real one?

Correct-a-mundo!! Now there is one car without a vin plate, and the original car has it's original vin plate along with the state issued replacement. Took a while, but, it ended good - almost, the guy without a vin needs his money back We're working on that one for him.
