anyone else get this email today from Hagerty Insurance?
"Hagerty wants to know: WHAT'S YOUR VOTE FOR THE WORST VEHICLE DESIGN OF ALL TIME? We want your nominations for the most unsafe, most poorly styled, most poorly engineered vehicles of all time (or any combination thereof)! Please submit the year, make and model of your (least favorite) choice to [email protected] Your submission will be kept anonymous, so feel free to give us your "worst" vote! Submissions will be accepted until July 23. Check back at www.hagerty.com for poll results soon!" Surely the Pinto is a no-brainer but I am really at a loss, so please give me some suggestions without insulting any Corvair owners. |

Chris,
It's 1971 and my girlfriend (now my wife) needed a new car that was cheap but as reliable as possible with nice features. We looked at the Vega. Rubber floor mats, taxi-cab plaid interior and a 2-spd auto. Then we looked at a Pinto. Carpets, nice vinyl buckets and a 3-spd auto, and more horsepower, all for less money. I couldn't have been a more dedicated Chevy guy at the time, but I had to pick the Pinto for her. It held up for over 100Kmi and the only real maintenance was to replace the cam and followers (a known wear issue with those cars). I think the winner will be an AMC product. There are a few good candidates....... ![]() |

You know what Ken, I was thinking of older cars, but we're on the same page. The first time I saw one of those things, I thought it was the uglyist thing I'd EVER seen. I had to wonder what kind of mutation would buy a strange vehicle that looked like Darth Vader in the front and a garbage truck from the rear???? The guy who styled that "thing" should be taken out back and shot!

Having suffered through two of them, my vote would be the Vega. Honorable mention would go to the Chevy Citation, Chevette, and the forgetable Beretta.
![]() The AMC cars were ugly, but not infamous for bad engineering. The Pacer was ugly enough to make a freight train take a dirt road, and the Gremlin had to be the worst name ever given to a car, even worse than the Dodge Demon. Now there was a car that had some serious quality issues. ![]()

We are in salt country and we still see Chevettes around. They weren't anything to write home about but I don't see much of anything else around that age. I saw an old video clip of a Model A Ford crash test. Pretty scary.
