Default State of California Certificate of Title

I have a 68 Z with a photocopy of the California Title listing the black plates that were in the trunk as original to the Vin# of the car.
. How good of documentation is this if any?

California law states you must carry the original or facsimile of registration in the car or on your person when operating the vehicle, so probably a copy might carry a lot more weight that you may think. You would need to go to a AAA office, and not the DMV, which will more than likely promptly confiscate those black plates if you do not have an exceptionally valid reason why they should not. The state wants those non-reflectorized plates off the road. AAA may work with you on getting those plates back on the car if you are a CA resident, DMV will probably not.

I'm not sure what year the copy of the pink is from, but if the plates start in V,W or X the car was certainly sold new here.If they start in Y or Z there's a chance the car was brought in state slightly later and registered here.Either way documented black plate Z 's are scarce and highly collectible.

Thanks, the plates start as follows VNK---. I am not looking to using these plates, just wondered if they are good documentation of a legit California one owner car. They do have a lot of bumps and bruises on them.

Bob,was that the 68 or 9 sold at Baher in Northridge? FWIW it had to be titled at the earliest in mid 69.ZRR was getting real close to the end run of black base and the blues were already in production if not actually in the system by then.

Yep...69...very late plate...blues were probably already in use. its actually ZRR 750...getting near the end of the supply I bet. Actually I think it may have been a dealer trade or something...I believe it actually sold out of Jack Head or maybe vice versa !

You have to keep in mind that some small town DMV's might go thru their supply of black plates at a slower pace so a big city DMV might be issuing blue plates while Littleberg is still issuing the black plates because they still have a drawer full of them.
