I rebuilt a Eaton Posi for a guy several years ago that had been in a fire. When I checked the hardness of the gears I found that they were soft and had to be replaced. This was not in a car when it burned, but sitting in a shop that burned. Any metal that is heat treated and then in a fire needs to be checked to see if the hardness has been affected.
