That same very thing is happening in PA from was I was told this past October. The notaries are going to a messenger service where the VIN and title are done via the internet to the DMV. This means that they had to restructure the old files and put them into computers. Some time along the way someone doesn't file something correctly and it gets "lost in the system" so to say. I just bought a 69 Nova and in the box that says original PA title date it has 4/25/07. It's not an out of state car. Someone messed up along the way from the restructure process and now I have no way of knowing when the car was originally titled. And I bought it back in October 16 of 07. The notary here told me that someone didn't do something right and that is why I have that date from 07 instead of something from 69! So where ever the guy had gotten the title transfer done previously, messed it up for everyone who owns this car thereafter. It's almost kind of looking for a GM part at a dealership. If you have the original GM parts book number from back in the 60's or 70's, you are golden. But if you don't, tuff luck! It happened the same way when GM restructured and put everything on their dealer network. Some how some numbers go omitted or "lost" a long the way. Not that they aren't there, it's just that someone has to find it the right way. I hope it kind of helps you. I don't even know if you could use the title number because they may have given you a new number. I am not familiar with out of state as the only car I have was originaly from Maryland and that was my 55 Bel-Air. And in that PA title box it has 6/22/90 and I purchased the car on 1/20/05. So prior to 1990 the car was in MD. Every one of my other cars has the original PA title date. Those are the only two I had discrepancies with.

Maryland does awesome title searches - just in case you wanted to find some MD info on your Bel-Air.
