Default jeter's 3,000 hit ball

hey guys, i think it was awesome and refreshing that the kid who caught derek jeter's 3,000 hit ball just wanted to give the ball to jeter. he didn't ask for anything, just wanted to meet him to give it to him personally. the ball was supposed to be worth 400,000. that is what some yankee collectors were gonna pay for it. the kid was brought up very respectful and his parents should be and i'm sure are proud of him!

According to today's newspaper the one who returned the ball to Jeter (Christian Lopez from Highland Park NY) "was rewarded with 4 seasons tickets for the rest of the year plus some Yankees memorabalia". Hmmmmmmm I think Jeter can afford a little more than that.

according to reports, the kid has 200k in student loans and a dead end job. Did Jeter "give the ball back" so to speak during his contract negotiations.? Yankees should pay off the kids loans at least. Big deal, they gave him a 1/2 yr worth of season tix, Jeter just built a 30,000 sq ft house. It would be one thing of the guy that hit it was making $40k a yr, definitely give it back, but the Yankees are still peddling dirt from the old stadium. Yankees and Jeter should do the right thing for the kid.

Through the years, I've found this to be true of many of the "wealthier" people that I have done work for. Sad, that's what it is.

I was reading that the kid may now have to pay taxes on the items that he received. I hope that the Yankee organization or Jeter does right by him.

..."The IRS will likely consider Lopez's gratuities from the Yankees as income, and if so, he could end up having to pay anywhere from $5,000 to $13,000 in taxes, according to the New York Daily News. The New York Times, meanwhile, says the face value of the tickets to the remaining 32 regular-season games at Yankee Stadium are worth anywhere between $44,800 and $73,600. The paper's conservative estimate puts Lopez's tax bill at $14,000."

give the tickets back and the yankees should invite him, as a guest, to every remaining game.
