I had an M20 4.10 '69Z and currently have an M20 3.55 '69Z, definitely possible!

I owned several Z28's with M20, and it's much better due to the 302 low end torque.

Steve,
Did you mean to say lack of low end torque? To me finding a 67-69 Z/28 with an original M-20 was always a good thing.
