Default ZL-1 oil pan & windage tray

Hey guys!

I have been wondering about this for some time now. Did
the Zl-1 Camaro's use a windage tray? I was always under
the impression that the Camaro subframe design mandated the
use of an oil pan design that precluded the use of a windage
tray. Is this accurate? This topic came up recently and
I figured one or more of you guys would know for sure.

Furthermore, can any other big block oil pan ( Corvette,
for instance ) be used in the 69 Camaro? If one could, I
would assume the standard L/71 windage tray would have been
included on the L/78 option.

In doing some further research tonight, I read that the
ZL-1 engines may have indeed used a windage tray and that
the oil pan baffle area may have been modified to work with
this windage tray. I'd like to know if the windage tray
used was the L/71 style ( 5 mounting studs ) or another
version windage tray.

ZL-1 engines in Camaros did not use windage trays due to the Camaro oil pan.

What I was told when we did ours was that ZL1 engines were all assembled with the tray. For Camaro applications they cut the factory baffle out of the 4 quart pan. We did not use the tray and left the baffle in the pan.

Ask Ken Barnhardt.

if I remember right they had to mod the pan cause the studs for the tray were in the way and they did not use the trays
the vet pan is to long on the bottom to fit a camaro it will hit the steering rods

Thanks Eddie!

I figured the Vette pan would interfere with the steering
linkage, else GM would have used it back in the day.

Hey Eddie maybe a shallow Moroso pan would work for you. They may have them in 6QT. capacity for the BB.

it had one on it when i first got it and i should have left it on but with the wheels i put on back then left it pretty close to the road and it did hit a couple of times but with the stock wheels there is plenty of room now maybe if i ever pull the motor back out that is what i will do unless i end up selling it its getting harder and harder to not worry about the car sure is taking the fun out of driving it
