Re: Ryan Weaver's 1969 Olds Cutlass S W31 Club Coupe
Nothing lasts forever.
So far powder coat is beyond your budget correct? A arms, rear end housings, and suspension pieces dont need to be powder coated. You can source really nice pit free pieces from out west and paint them to look like brand new for less than powder coating your original pieces. Nothing on my frame is powder coated except for the core support. Everything was blasted, filled, epoxy'ed and painted. Powder coat your frame if its a must, but the other stuff doesnt need it. |

The Dude,
You did your project the way you wanted......let's allow Ryan to do it his way If Ryan decides to Powder Coat his Gear Shift Lever.....it's his Lever. Dan

Re: Ryan Weaver's 1969 Olds Cutlass S W31 Club Coupe
Obviously it's Ryan's choice, but I would agree that powder coating can leave much to be desired over a good quality gun-sprayed paint. I would say painting is even more advantageous on a Midwest car with rust pitting on the undercarriage...because it can be filled and sanded smooth.
Good luck to Ryan either way. |

I found one piece of the sway bar end link still attached that I need to cut off, also need to get the seals out of the rear.... I tried my slide hammer but it was too petite :-( I have seen something that screws into the seal and attaches to a bigger slide hammer?

Dan </div></div> So apparently we cant offer any tips other than "nice job" and "looks good". Scuncio said what I said weeks ago about powder and pitting. Powder coating his frame is the wrong idea and will not turn out like he wants it to. He has his springs in the blast powder pile. No idea if he plans on coating them but that is a bad idea too. New springs are relatively cheap. Eaton says this about powdercoating them... <span style="font-weight: bold">In order to get the paint particles hot enough to bond they must be heated very close to the annealing temperature of the spring steel. Annealing means the heat treatment of the springs is being removed. Annealed springs will no longer support any weight.</span> Im sorry Im not saying thatta boy with everything I see. Im trying to save him some headaches and money wasted on stuff he doesnt need to do. |

It's obvious that you are against Powder Coat....it's clearly not for you and we get that.....now let us allow Ryan do what he wishes to do.

Re: Ryan Weaver's 1969 Olds Cutlass S W31 Club Coupe
I have the opportunity to powder coat just about anything I need done and I pass on it in favor of painting. Not a fan of the thick look you get with powder coating. I can't see powder coating on springs lasting all that long with as much as they move.

Hi Chris, it was great to meet at PSMCDR, and MCACN!!!! Yup, no plastic in the oven:-) I have the tie rods already, and have the pitman arm and center link on order, I will see what they look like and I am thinking about coating the steering components with Boe-Shield or one of the recommended protectants so my chassis restoration has just that one more step towards perfection:-) (Slippery slope) I will check that DSL supplier as well. The have procured non-finned drums for all the way around:-) (The finned rears will be blasted and powder coated for spare, but not machined, if the cost is reasonable) PS: Remember we found the one side of my car has the W-30,31,32 front fender support bracket and special Phillips screws and the other has the normal non W-Machine bracket and bolts........ you mentioned possibly having an extra........ LMK I can't remember which side, I will have to look. "OAI W-Machine" wiper washer fluid bottle? (Mine has a little piece missing for the corner, casually looking) 4 speed shifter floor hump out of a rust free donor car? Ryan </div></div> I've only been able to locate complete car sets of those phillips head "bolts". I have some singles still on braces or fenders and can't get them off. I have stuff off getting plated, so let me see what happens when it all comes back. I thought it was driver side. as for that frame discussion, I would vote for dipping and e-coating. There's a place outside Milw that costs $1000. I had some items powdercoated years ago and just not happy with them. However, I did have some rims powdercoated, then I painted the correct color on the face and those came out nice. The powdercoating does add thickness to the parts and the rims always seem to stick on axle flanges and area on the front drums where the bearing go. These are the SSII on my W-31 if one is wondering. I just need to sand that opening in the rim down more, but without going all the way to bare metal. the washer bottle is the same as all other 68/69, it's just bolted onto the other inner fender. I have a REAL nice one, but I compared it to the one off my W-31 and the mounting holes are larger. Yet there is no evidence of them ever having a screw installed to them. weird. I can't help you on the shifter hump. Boeshield is good stuff. I'm using it on the fuel tank in my GT-37. And on the brake lines on my truck since the salt is just eating the underside of it. This spring it gets new brake lines that are already coated.

i love the upside of powder, decision made! Remember this poor old car sat for 39 years, she needs some shine and a good run!! Not shine and more sitting!, Ryan
