I'm pretty sure 9 68 translates to Sept 1968

Thanks guys. I always thought these were like the Big Blocks and used the Julian calendar. Interesting thing is this came off a 69 September built Z

UMM, I think this will never work with an 8 inch balancer. However, it will work with the smaller one.
That timing tab is too close to the centerline of the crankshaft hole and is the wrong style tab. The correct timing tab has several more increments for setting the timing thus is larger. This tap folds UP and is then pin/spot welded to the cover three times. The 8 inch versions bend DOWN thus are behind the balancer when installed and has four pin/spot welds. If you notice the three creases in the center of the cover you may see that they are roughly in the 12, 4 and 8 o’clock positions. The tab needs to be slightly above the 4 o’clock crease to clear the 8 inch balancer. I’m not convinced as to the dates either. I believe most of my SB covers are between 1 and 42. Thus I think they are dated by the week. Then we can discuss if that’s calendar week or production week. Just my 2 cents worth. |

Good catch. I think that tab is about 1/2 inch too close to the center of the hole.
