I need some '69 Chevelle SS articles.
In my continuing research I need some period articles (scanned) that review the '69 Chevelle Malibu Coupe SS. Also any specific articles or comparison articles on the performance of the L78 Chevelle SS with a close ratio four speed. Also looking for any specific info on the Baltimore Chevelle plant during the '69 model year, i.e. significant events, unique practices, etc.
Thanks in advance!

Re: I need some '69 Chevelle SS articles.
Another thot - if anyone has a "Chevelle SS Portfolio" series book which is a compilation of period articles (from R/T, Motor Trend, Car Life, etc.) on the old Chevelles. That would certainly work.
Thanks!

Re: I need some '69 Chevelle SS articles.
Sam,
I'd be very interested to see what you compile over time. I have two 69 Super Sports from the Baltimore factory, one is original (69 SS 325hp/4sp), the other is a non-numbers convertible. I have been comparing what I have found on my 69 (unrestored) to other originals that I have been able to find. So far, I have found certain fasteners that don't match what you'd normally find on 69 Chevelles from other factories; and other mistakes with the car. Notably, I have found on unrestored 69 Baltimore cars that the factory put a gray sealer around the rear tail panel moulding nylon fasteners, on the inside of the trunk. I had originally thought that a previous owner did this, but have seen two low mileage Baltimore cars that had the same thing (one is a COPO). I have yet to see this on any other 69's from other assembly plants. This may have been an effort to stop trunk leaks which in my experience have come from a poor seal between the qtr panel extension and the qtr itself. Also, my car seems to have a poorly aligned front right fender, in that it bulges out. I've also seen this on many 69 Chevelles. I know that it can be fixed by raising the right core support mount, but I don't want to break the bolts and current alignment of the bumper and inner fender, so I'll leave it for historical reasons. Hope this is some of the info you are looking for. I can follow up with you on other details if you like. Good luck. Phil Woj. |

Re: I need some '69 Chevelle SS articles.
In looking through my literature I find a surprising lack of anything pertaining to the '69 model year.
The Brooklands Books compilation shown below has some great articles from Cars, Motor Trend, Car Life, Car and Driver, Road & Track and more. It has road tests on big block Chevelles from the Z16 through the LS6 but nothing at all on any '69. The only '69 in the entire book is on the cover. I have some Motorbooks International Chevelle and Monte Carlo editions and could only find one cropped shot of the SS emblems on the front fender. Do I smell conspiracy?? I did post a '69 427 article in the Baldwin Motion section a while back - if that's any help. - - -

Re: I need some '69 Chevelle SS articles.
I appreciate the effort fellows. I am getting some help from a deployed soldier (dyed-in-the-wool Chevelle fan) who has done a bunch of plant research and is developing a decent data base. I found the book "Chevelle and SS Portfolio" on Amazon that has articles compiled for 64-72. Does anyone know this book and can make a recommendation?
Thanks, Sam

Re: I need some '69 Chevelle SS articles.
One of my favorite 69 articals is in Hot Cars...Feb 1969..
Titled... Super Stock Showdown..they road test a Byrne Bros. L-78 M-21, 4.10 and a Fairlane Cobra Jet 428 3.50 gear out of Larsen Ford. The Chevelle was Bill Barnett's personal demo..He vowed it would blow the doors off any Cobra Jet! Great artical, but may be a bit tough to find. Steve |
