There used to be a great big oak tree behind the starting line. Art fired up his car and killed half the tree. He came back the next year and killed the other half. There also used to be a plank fence behind the starting line. The planks were attached to the back side of the supports, so when he hit the burner it blew the planks across the road and into the potato field on the other side. When he came back the next year they had reattached the fence planks to the front side of the supports. My dad started racing at Stanton the year before it was paved (1956 or so). There was a concrete starting pad and you ran off that into the grass. You also had to stop on occasion to let the airplanes land. K
