The P39 and P63 were two of the very few production mid engine airplanes of WWII. I am thinking none of the other designs every made it to production. It was also unique in that it fired a 37mm cannon through the center hub of the propeller. Pretty cool airplane especially when you get up close and personal.

Yes, a 10' two piece shaft that would bend with the airframe during heavy maneuvers.

Was having trouble envisioning how the gun could fire through the center of the prop hub with a driveshaft driving the prop. Now I see there is a gearset involved and the driveshaft is not in the center line. Really neat!
