Central Pacific Railroad #60, more commonly known as the Jupiter, was a 4-4-0 steam locomotive built in 1868, and which made history as one of two locomotives to meet at the Golden Spike ceremony on Promontory Summit on May 10, 1869 to commemorate the completion of the First Transcontinental Railroad. The original locomotive was scrapped in 1909 and a replica built in 1979. The other locomotive was also scrapped. A replica was built at the same time of the Jupiter. Walt Disney Company employees, led by Ward Kimball, were commissioned to paint and letter the locomotives. Original photo of the event Last edited by Lee Stewart; 07-10-2018 at 10:03 AM. |
