Also keep in mind that is california, with the most strict regulations and air quality standards. And according to california, everything causes cancer.

Not at all. I certainly agree with the cost versus value completely but people just need to understand a $10 paint job is likely not one on a car that has been stripped to bare metal and completely redone but rather paint over paint and on repairs that will not last very many years. I see our paint jobs lasting indefinitely as well as any bodywork.

Also factor the cost of paint and supplies, I bet you'll be surprised at how expensive the (good) stuff is!

All great points here, yes Cali is tough, and we will not just paint a car, we MUST strip the car to bare metal to be sure we are not painting over a problem. If you bring us a stripped car, with no issues, it is 30K, if we have to do a bunch of work, ie metal rust repair etc, it goes up from there. There are lots of shops that can do a very good job for 8-10K. However if we are doing a restoration, we only do it one way ..... Perfect, and that costs a bunch. It's always best to review the value of your car and what you want it for........a good friend of mine painted his car in his garage and he did a great job, paint lasted 3-4 years before bubbles developed.
For myself and our clients, TIME is the issue, when we take a car, or do our own, we want that car done in NO MORE than one year, and that costs money TIME IS THE ONLY COMMODITY WE CANNOT REPLACE.

Our average job after media blast is between 400 to 700 hours. That is machup with seals and belts installed for correct panel alignment. Sectioning as needed, all body work. paint and color sand and polish. when you do the math and add $5K for all the materials $30K starts to sound cheap. That's why I Qualify my customers and only except two in a year. And of course the car must have a emotional or financial attachment to the client to make any cents.
