It takes a lot of work to replicate the controlled chaos of an assembly line... gun angles and speed make all the difference.

This shows where I scratched off the black and get the grey primer exposed, also the P T B stamps.

The sloppy factory firewall paint is funny. Very few would actually restore a car that way. Just like people fret over perfect panel gaps and perfect straight body panels. That type of perfection never existed when these cars were new.

On the blue car you can see the transition from firewall black to white over spray quite clearly on the passenger side firewall and on the firewall behind the distributor base (firewall black mostly below on tunnel and more white above on the flat firewall area) and below the wiper motor at the seam is mostly firewall black and more white overspray going upwards. The Fisher body grey I have seen is quite grey, kick panel areas, etc. The firewall black is most often absent in the areas behind the wiper motor, an area that typically rusts. I have an original '69 Camaro with a very crisp mask line for the firewall black, it goes beneath the wiper area, very little paint there.

Shauger is spot on, your looking at gray primer on the blue car.

Mike,
I've never seen grey primer over the firewall black. I've seen the grey primer under the dash black and under the firewall black, I've never seen it used over the black paint in these areas. Ed's firewall looks the same, lots of white overspray over the firewall black, Thanks for the pics Ed.

Mark
Well aware of that, looking at the close up shot of the trim tag on the blue car, I see gray primer and a lack of blackout all together.

We're seeing the same thing Mike. There is no blackout on the upper portion of the firewall that I can see just gray primer. There's not much paint covering the upper firewall, hence the rust...

I'm going by a small picture so it's hard to make a definitive statement. Could the blackout be covered by the white stripe overspray making it look gray...sure.
