Looks like a hand held alignment rod, never seen that before in any other assembly line photos. Love the upside-down C in Pontiac.

Correct - it's a "drift pin".

Now that you've noticed it you'll see it in other vintage photos too.

The 1966 GTO was the only year both Manual and Automatic transmissions came with the resonators.

Cordova top and Rally I wheels.
