Well Mr. sc69sam thank you and be sure to seek me out when you get to the show. I want to put faces with all of these names. I just went outside and the weather is exactly the way it was that day 40 years ago, upper 30's and windy. I would love to go for a ride to reminisce but like back then it still doesn't start under 45 degrees. The picture that was posted earlier today was taken on January 1, 1969.

When ever I see that Nickey logo, I think of the time that I picked up friends at Northern and headed to the Windy. I had always heard of Nickey but being from the sticks I had no idea where it was. So I asked one of the girls if she could take us by that dealership on the way in to the State Theater. When I pulled onto the lot I thought I died and gone to heaven. At home we had such small selections of cars but there every color Z with all hoods and spoilers and some with JL8s. By then the second or third series of cars were out and mine was like a stripo special. WLS advertised heavy for them between music.

That is very cool info, Dan. It would be great to find one of those Nickey JL8 Z28s.

One listed for like $4500 as I recall not sure. Loaded RS Vinyl top, tilt, 8 track, hounds tooth and more. I remember being so shocked that a car could cost that much! Mine was a basic jane that listed for $3854.70. That RPO JL8 cost like $500.00 alone!

Wow...what an awesome story and step back in time. Yes, it was a much simpler time for all of us.

Congratulations on preserving a true piece of Chevy Musclecar History. I can't wait to see it, along with all of the others.

I mean seriously, can't you just visualize this lineup, side-by-side? Incredible...

Well, I knew it wasn't Barnhart or Cumby!

I just called Barnhart. You're toast.

Just make sure you tell him I spelled his name right.

Oh... and just so you know, I have hired Kasey as my weekend body guard.

The Bait and Switch Story

After purchasing my new 1969 Z/28 Camaro at 5:00 PM on a friday night, I immediately headed over to the Davenport,Iowa One Ways. Muscle Cars would drive around for hours east on 3rd avenue, north one block, then west on 4th avenue, south one block, back east on 3rd avenue and do it over and over again. There were four lanes wide and usually ten deep at any given time. I was no different, over my long driving career of two years, I spent most of my time cruising and talking with the guys about cars, and cruising and talking with the girls trying to hook one in. But there was something about driving dad’s car or driving a rat that discouraged the babes to join forces with me for a cruise. That is until I bought the gaudiest and loudest Camaro in town! Burgundy with red stripes got it done! The chambered exhaust didn’t hurt either! The girls were engaging in cat fights for a ride in the badest Z around. Well one night I struck up a conversation with a cute babe and after awhile we decided to go out the next night. I had quizzed her a bit about was it the car or did she really want to be seen with me alone. She assured me “oh no I really want to go out with you the car has nothing to do with it”. The next morning I was telling my friend Greg McKenzie about the deal, and I asked him if he would like to borrow my car to take out his girl Christine and I would use his 1937 Chevy 4 door to take out my date. He naturally agreed and so it was that evening I arrived at my date’s house that I hit the binders and went sailing on by for about four car lengths do to the bad brakes. I looked up at the house and I saw her mother looking out the window rather anxiously wandering what was going on. I backed up and went up to the door and the chickadee met me with “what’s that?’ We talked for a bit and soon I was on my way to Deb’s Drive Inn alone with a very limited agenda for the night. I was telling my folks years later about that night and my Mom said “that’s ok Danny, girls like that are very shallow!” I didn’t bother telling Mom about the many other dates that worked out much better than that one did.
