Bruce, those must have been some epic times! I've been a fan of Patti Smyth for as long as long as I've been a fan of VH and I'd love to have been at that concert.
I did see VH in 1982 with Diamond Dave at the Civic Arena in Pittsburgh. Free tickets through a buddy's dad where we got to sit in the Super Box, and that concert was almost life changing. I was just a stupid kid into old regular pop music that was on the popular radio channels, with only some rock interest, but after that, I expanded my tastes into some of the harder rock and VH has always remained one of my favorites by far. I hate to say it, but DLR really kind of stole the show (he'd probably be proud to hear that, lol) and I wasn't mature enough to understand the legend who played before me. I do now, and his loss hurts. I know that EVH was remarried, but Valerie Bertinelli's Instagram said that she and their son Wolfgang were holding him when he passed away. I guess their love was always there in spite of their breakup. May he Rest in Peace.

Mark, living in SoCal back then was awesome!
There were (now famous) bands all over-playing every night of the week. The girl who lived across the street from me in Anaheim dated (and married) one of the members of Social Distortion. Lots of the band members were always hanging out there. A guy I worked with younger sister dated Don Dokken for a while. The clubs on the Sunset Strip like Gazzarri's, Whisky a go-go, the Troubadour always had great bands. There was also Madame Wongs, Club Lingerie, the Palomino, the Starwood...and on and on. Check out a piece of mail sent to the LA Times from Gazzari's on the Sunset strip after the Times snubbed them on an article about local bands...look who Mr. Gazzarri was talking about! (From the Van Halen archives) Check out some of the bands on this add from the Starwood in the 80's. The Go Go's, Wall of Voodoo and Berlin... ![]() And from this ad for Madam Wong's-the band playing on March 1st called "Picture This" . One of the members worked with my oldest brother at Nuclear Pharmacy in Orange County-so we went to watch them play at Madame Wongs. These guys were financed by Lindsey Buckingham of Fleetwood Mac-so I was able to meet Lindsey very briefly that night.

Anthony-that was sooo long ago! The internet is pretty cool (Thanks Al Gore).
A week ago-I was telling a friend of mine that we saw INXS right after Shabooh Shoobah was released at Magic Mountain in Valencia, Ca. They had Friday nights where you paid admission to the park-rode the rides and then after dark, they had up and coming bands play there. We saw quite a few well known bands play there as well So, I checked out YouTube and... ![]()

It's always hard to lose people you have admired for so long. Fortunately his music and legacy will live on forever. Sympathy and best regards for the Van Halen family.
